Hare Krishna Melbourne

The Hare Krishna Movement

A global spiritual community centred around music, mindfulness, service and meaningful connection.

What is the Hare Krishna movement?

The Hare Krishna movement shares timeless spiritual practices that help people slow down, reconnect and experience meaningful community. Through music, meditation, vegetarian food and acts of service, people from all walks of life are welcomed into experiences that inspire connection, mindfulness and joy.

5,000+ Years Ago

An ancient wisdom tradition centred around mindfulness, connection and spiritual understanding has been shared across generations for thousands of years.

Centuries later, the Lord Himself descends in the form of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, not to demand worship, but to freely distribute the sublime practice of bhakti-yoga – the path of loving God through devotion. His gift is beautifully simple: no rules, no rituals, no philosophy degree required. Simply chant the holy names and engage in loving service. That is the entire offering. Yet behind this simplicity lies a profound, thoughtful revelation: who we truly are, what we are seeking, and how we can find our way back home.

The Seven Purposes of ISKCON

Why we exist.

01

To systematically share spiritual knowledge and educate people in the techniques of spiritual life... for real unity and peace in the world.

02

To propagate consciousness of Krishna (God), as revealed in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.

03

To bring members together with each other and closer to Krishna... the prime entity, the source of all souls.

04

To teach and encourage sankirtana... the congregational chanting of the holy names, as revealed by Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

05

To erect for members and society a holy place of transcendental pastimes, dedicated to the personality of Krishna.

06

To bring members closer together for the purpose of teaching a simpler, more natural way of life.

07

To publish and distribute periodicals, magazines, books and other writings that support these purposes.

Seven Purposes

The Seven Purposes of ISKCON

Why we exist?

To systematically propagate spiritual knowledge to society at large and to educate all people in the techniques of spiritual life in order to check the imbalance of values in life and to achieve real unity and peace in the world.

To propagate a consciousness of Krishna (God), as it is revealed in the great scriptures of India, Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.

To bring the members of the Society together with each other and nearer to Krishna, the prime entity, thus developing the idea within the members, and humanity at large, that each soul is part and parcel of the quality of Godhead (Krishna).

To teach and encourage the sankirtana movement, congregational chanting of the holy name of God, as revealed in the teachings of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

To erect for the members and for society at large a holy place of transcendental pastimes dedicated to the personality of Krishna.

To bring the members closer together for the purpose of teaching a simpler, natural way of life.

With a view towards achieving the before mentioned purposes, to publish and distribute periodicals, magazines, books and other writings.

Temple Background

What is the Hare Krishna Mahamantra?

The sounds of the Hare Krishna mahamantra can be heard drifting from temple halls, rising through festival crowds, or hummed quietly in a kitchen. It is a simple, gentle chant – and it sits at the very heart of the Hare Krishna tradition.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare

So what is it?

The Maha Mantra is a sacred call from the heart. By chanting these divine names –Hare, Krishna, and Rama– we awaken our original spiritual nature and reconnect with the source of eternal joy. Just chant, and let the mantra carry you back home.

Hare refers to a loving, divine energy that offers protection and closeness. Krishna and Rama are names for the Supreme – the source of all joy, meaning and shelter.

When chanted with sincerity, the mind becomes quieter, the heart opens, and a sense of connection slowly returns. This is not about adopting a new belief. It is about remembering something already deep within.

Why chant it?

Life can be noisy and rushed. The mahamantra offers a portable peace – no special equipment, no prior knowledge, no rigid rules. Just sound. Just a few moments of chanting.

People chant alone at home, in small gatherings, or with crowds at Sunday feasts and festivals. The sound carries the chanter. Before long, the weight feels lighter. The spirit feels lifted.

That is why it is called maha (great) mantra (sound that frees the mind). It is a gentle, joyful way to come closer – to oneself, to others, and to something timeless and true.
